P1 Father-son camp 2024 night hunt

LOCATION NO. 1

Jacob Ballas Memorial Bridge

About the Jacob Ballas Memorial Bridge

In designing the St Andrew's Village, the reunion of all 3 schools in Potong Pasir was made a reality by the erection of the bridge that links the Secondary school, the Junior school and the Junior College.

The Bridge spans the Kallang River. Look down! Do you see any otters?

In the past, when heavy rain resulted in the Kallang River bursting its banks causing extensive flooding in Potong Pasir.

St. Andrew’s played an important part in the community in such events. If you want to learn more about how St. Andrew’s helped the community, look out for the stories and pictures that have been placed on the bridge.

Jacob Ballas was a Jewish student who was very poor. The school helped him in financial needs and provided him with a good education. He went on to have a successful banking career and donated a lot of money to help the school and the nation.

Even though he has passed on, the Jacob Ballas Foundation continues to manage his money to ensure that some funds are given to help the needy students in St Andrew's.

In the middle of the bridge, a time capsule was placed and sealed. It will be re-opened in 50 years.

Please perform the following activity with your son:

ACTIVITY:

  1. Read the Memorial and Flood Stories if they want.
  2. Jacob Ballas was grateful for the help he received and resolved to pay it forward. Discuss with your son how we show our gratitude for the things we receive.
